Tsar’s Bride Overture – Rimsky Korsakov

Piano Concerto No 2 – Shostakovich
Soloist – Christopher Atkinson

Symphony No 5 – Tchaikovsky

A rare but attractive overture by Rimsky Korsakov starts this all Russian programme. Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto was written in 1959 for his son Maxim’s nineteenth birthday and later premiered by Maxim. It is uncharacteristic for Shostakovich in that it is entirely cheerful and even playful in outlook. Tchaikovsky’s fifth symphony is a firm favourite with audiences the world over. Autobiographical, it starts with tragedy and ends with triumph.
