MusicMusic in our Community – Supporting Creativity and Education

In the Parish of Boston, we believe that access to music is an important entitlement for both adults and children.  Through our community music programmes, we provide opportunities for people to explore their personal relationship with music and also to develop their own skills, talents and creativity.  Please take a moment to read about some of the opportunities we offer below.

Chorister Tuition Scheme

Children who join our Junior Choir can have access to free, individual musical tuition on an instrument or voice once they become full choristers and show a commitment to our choir.

Promoting Young Talent

We also encourage local young talent through our Summer Lunchtime Concert Series, where individuals and groups can perform in the magnificent setting of St Botolph’s, to an appreciative audience.

Concerts and Recitals

We have an exciting range of concerts and recitals in church each year, given by our own music team and other visiting musicians, including professional ensemble as well as local amateur groups, who provide opportunities for local people to develop their musical skills.  We are pleased to support these groups and to provide opportunities for them to perform in our church, which is a wonderful venue.  We are proud of our associations with Boston Sinfonia, Swineshead Silver Band and other local ensembles in our area.

Our summer recital series features concerts given by a range of professional organists, who come to entertain our audiences with a varied and colourful programme of music, played on our wonderful Harrison and Harrison organ.  Visitors often combine our concerts with a visit to the Refectory for a light lunch before the music commences.

Concerts in 2023 will include performances of orchestral, choral, organ and brass music.  Look out for details of upcoming events on our social media pages and also on our church notice boards.

Opportunities for Adults 

The Parish of Boston has its own music adult-education programme, which includes access to a range of musical activities, each providing access to music at very limited cost.  These include our Adult Ukulele sessions, which have already proved popular.  Other classes will start in 2023, including basic music theory and music appreciation.

Music Outreach Programmes

Our Director of Music enjoys positive relationships with a number of our local primary and secondary schools and collaborates with them to explore ways that the parish can work more closely with the young people in our area in a musical context.  A new project began in January 2023 which provided exciting activities for a group of local schools and is described below:

Boston Big Sing Project Spring 2023

Our Director of Music works with 6 local primary schools each term, visiting each school weekly over 10 weeks, to deliver a 45 minute vocal workshop.  In each workshop, the children learn how to warm-up their voices, how to breathe to support their singing and then how to sing together in a musical ensemble.  The children learn a new song each week, linked to a chosen theme.  At the end of the project, each school joins with the others in St Botolph’s to perform the songs they have learned in front of their parents and relatives in an evening concert, accompanied by live musicians.  Ad the concerts are themed, schools can choose to extend the activities to include other work, which can be put on display in our church for the event.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Thanks to a generous grant from the Diocesan Transformation Fund, we are able to offer each school the opportunity to join us on their first project free of charge.  Each subsequent project will cost £400, which covers the cost of the 10 workshops and the performance.

Our schools have chosen to focus on Year 3 and Year 4 pupils but projects can be tailored to suit different age groups.  If your school might be interested in participating in a project with our music staff, please contact us at
